Analysis Of The Movie Bird - 1587 Words
On August 29th, 1920, Charlie ââ¬Å"YardBirdâ⬠Parker landed in this world and 34 years later he flew away. Within those 34 years, music was eternally influenced by Bird, and this influence continues to be celebrated all around the world. In 1988, Clint Eastwood and Joel Oliansky worked together to create a documentary titled ââ¬Å"Birdâ⬠based on Charlie Parkerââ¬â¢s life. There are many story telling techniques used within this film that aid in making it an extremely brilliant motion picture. ââ¬Å"Birdâ⬠is very accurate in portraying the reality of Charlie Parkerââ¬â¢s life, and this accuracy is important because it will help to present and therefore preserve his legacy. A legacy that will intrigue and inspire musicians forevermore. There are many storyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Movie critic for the Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert explains this scene, ââ¬Å"It shows him touring the West Coast and hearing some simple truths one night from Gillespie, who told him that the difference between them was that Diz took care of business, and Charlie took care of screwing up.â⬠Gillespie was not a heavy drinker or an avid drug user, unlike Charlie. In that way these two musical legends were complete opposites. Because ââ¬Å"Birdâ⬠focuses on this contrasting relationship, we are given a clearer idea of who Parker was. Included in the aspects of ââ¬Å"Birdâ⬠that make it such a great film is the outstanding acting performance by Forest Whitaker, who played Charlie Parker, and Diane Venora who played Chan Richardson. Some critics believe that ââ¬Å"Birdâ⬠was a bit too scattered, but was held together smoothly because of Forest Whitakerââ¬â¢s acting. ââ¬Å"Forest Whitaker s brilliance is the force that holds the scattered pieces of Bird together. Only rarely in movies do characters achieve this sort of palpability, and then only when presented to us by a remarkable performer. And this is a remarkable performer giving a gentle, exuberant, charismatic performance,â⬠proclaims Washington Post Staff Writer Hal Hinson. With such pressure to portray the center focus of the film, Whitaker truly delivers an excellent representation of the mysterious musical genius many of us have gotten to know through recordings. William Timothy, the first of three children, well known as Tim Oââ¬â¢Brien is an American Veteran writer, born on October 1, 1946, in Austin, Minnesota, United States of America (Herzog 14). He grew up in Worthington, a small shielded community near the borders of Iowa and South Dakota. We will write a custom essay sample on Tim Oââ¬â¢Brien or any similar topic only for you Order Now He described himself as a vivid reader when he was young and had a thrilling interest in books and magic trick were evident realities on his storytelling power. This can also be linked to his parents who were enthusiastic readers. In other words, Oââ¬â¢Brien must have learned some reading secrets from his parents when he was young. Some of his short and electrifying stories include, ââ¬Å"The things they carriedâ⬠as well as other classic novels like the war novel, going after Cacciato produced in1978, which indeed made him known best for his writing experience about Vietnam War (Raymond 102). Worthington town similarly played a significant role in nurturing his thoughts while developing the artistic sensibility of his life as an author. He attended Macalester College in 1968 and awarded bachelorââ¬â¢s degree in Political Science. During his time in the institution, he was elected and served as the president of the studentââ¬â¢s union in college. Contrary to his criticisms against war, Tim Oââ¬â¢Brien was recruited into United States Army and then sent to Vietnam where he served for two years. Following his return from the military service, he resumed his studies and graduated from Harvard University. He then worked shortly as an intern, national affairs reporter at Washington Post up to May 1974. The war experience he gained from his two-year combat inspired his chief publication, titled If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me up and Ship Me Home. Oââ¬â¢Brienââ¬â¢s history clearly reveals the depression and misery wrecked on soldiers by the Vietnam War. His mythical work, the things they curried of 1990, (Oââ¬â¢Brien 816) is a combination of memoirs and fictitious stories in which he used the philosophical concepts of Verisimilitude to blurs the distinctions between two realms of the facts and the fictions in a unique way (Conan 2010). He incorporated the metaphysical approach attribute in his writing that flavored the quality of his stories. In his story, he discusses the distinction between ââ¬Ëstory-truthââ¬â¢, the truth of fiction and ââ¬Ëhappening-truthââ¬â¢, the truth of facts. From his works, Timothy suggests story truth is emotional truth thus the feelings generated by a fictional story is at times truer that what results from reading the facts thus making the literature more meaningful. Additionally, Oââ¬â¢Brien wrote numerous novels based on the war experience he obtained in the US Army. He earned the 1979 National Book Award for his works on Northern Lights published in1975 and Going after Cacciato of 1978. The Northern Lights novel discusses two brothers against each other as foils in which one brother went to Vietnam and the other failed to. (Raymond 99) Through this, the brothers learned to struggle and comprehend each oneââ¬â¢s values and motives. Following his extraordinary influence of Joseph Conradââ¬â¢s works, he modified Conradââ¬â¢s concepts of human aptitude for good and evil in his literary works. In his works, Oââ¬â¢Brien propounded timeless matter of the subject and its thematic range. He believed in his introversive idea, that literary works not only focus on the current affairs but also anticipates what the future holds for humankind, (Smith 34). Nuclear Age, which was published in 1985 was the third Oââ¬â¢Brienââ¬â¢s novel of his literary works and describes much from his personal experience. His expertise in creating an amusing look at the serious subject protagonist, a middle-aged man who grew under an atomic umbrella, and suffered severely from paranoia over the prospect of nuclear war and finds comfort in digging a hole in his backyard attempting to burry and quiet all the imaginations that antagonized him. Oââ¬â¢Brien demonstrated this being the real fear and threat of the bomb. His creativity in writing approach of war blending fact and fiction is comparable to other technical war writers like Michael Herr and inspired eminent figures such as Truman Capote, Norman Mailer and Tom Wolfe. However, key elements of his works encompass the categorization and fascination of emotional subject matters. Owing to this traits, his fictional works are therefore considered to have made an immense impact on the readers of his novels. Other Oââ¬â¢Brienââ¬â¢s electrifying works are The Nuclear Age, published in 1985, In the Lakes of The Woods of 1994, Tomcat in Love of 1998 and July, July that was published in 2000, which took the world of literature with a storm. In a span of two years, Oââ¬â¢Brienââ¬â¢s short stories The things they curried, was first published in Esquire and in return, it received the 1987 National Magazine Award Fiction. The short story was again selected for 1987, best American Short story. The lake of Woods forms another interesting novel written by Oââ¬â¢Brien and published in 1994. It took Oââ¬â¢Brienââ¬â¢s works into greater heights by agitating much on guilt, culpability, complicity and the moral courage, (Bates 265). He invents his protagonist John Wade, who is also a Vietnam veteran, aspiring to win a senatorial election seat. He later lost slightly as charges on his complicity in the Lai massacre became known during his campaign trail. Oââ¬â¢Brien raises larger inquiries about the fallouts of war and its consequences after the fighting has ceased and the participants returned home. He wore James Fenimire Cooper Prize from the Society of American Historians and was selected as the best novel of 1994 by Times Magazine. His most recent Novel, Tomcat in Love, Oââ¬â¢Brien generated a Veteran Vietnam protagonist, Tom chippering through a love subject contrary to war. Oââ¬â¢Brien describes this as a comic novel about a politically incorrect hero, who was sexy. He strongly believed that his lovers will love the book, and his fans, the so-called junkies, the people who appreciate his writings liked it. He alludes that this was his best book ever and it stole the hearts of many who could not do without reading the novel. In conclusion, Oââ¬â¢Brien has won several prestigious awards in his many fictional works and worth being called a veteran in the writing field. His experience in writing the short story novels are highly acknowledged. He is a master of creative storytelling, a manipulator of literary form and one of the most challenging authors in his time with an ample content. His major contributions include the Nuclear Age, In the Lake of Woods, Tomcat in Love and July, July of 20000 More recently, he received $100,000 with the Pritxker Military Library Literature Award. Currently, he teaches at the Texas State University-San Marcos. How to cite Tim Oââ¬â¢Brien, Papers
King Lear William Shakespeare Essay Example For Students
King Lear William Shakespeare Essay Language used in literary work doesnââ¬â¢t always lead us to the truth and sometimes it fails to spread the message among the society. I think the best example for this claim is Harry potter. Harry potter series got phenomenal success, in my opinion itââ¬â¢s because of its uniqueness. The use of powerful language made it aesthetic. When we look at Harry potter as a literary work, in my point of view itââ¬â¢s nothing but an imaginary worldââ¬â¢s story that is not relatable. Its powerful language earned fame but didnââ¬â¢t depict any truth. Reasoning also plays a major role while understanding the truth. For example in king Lear William Shakespeare wrote When we are born, we cry, that we are come to this great stage of fools.ââ¬â¢ The scientists have their own explanation to this phenomenon whereas on the other hand we see William Shakespeare giving some other explanation so to understand it we need a huge amount of reasoning. To understand this claimââ¬â¢s truth we need to know in what sense the author is calling everyone a fool. Some claims like this have deeper meaning and if we donââ¬â¢t use reasoning, the meaning we draw out of it might not lead us to the truth. Reasoning helps us to understand the sense in which an author writes a particular work. However reasoning doesnââ¬â¢t always help us interpret a particular piece of work for the reasons that there are some literary works in which even reasoning wonââ¬â¢t take you to the truth. For example, Alice adventures in wonderland is a novel full of fantasy and doesnââ¬â¢t have anything else thatââ¬â¢s relatable even if we apply high level of reasoning we wonââ¬â¢t be able to get any truth out of it because not even reasoning can show what doesnââ¬â¢t exists in a particular novel. As Robert Louis Stevenson said, ââ¬Å"The difficulty of literature is not to write, but to write what you mean; not to affect your reader, but to affect him precisely as you wish.â⬠So unless an author writes what people from all societies and different background can understand he will not be able to show his literary workââ¬â¢s truth to everyone. So the subjectivity of an artwork can hide the truth in it Sometimes an author uses lot of imagery in order to try and make his work more artistic and unique than most other works, however, at times he does not consider that if its not done in a very careful manner it might make his work very complex and in turn it could confuse the people reading it, or it could misinterpreted. Language should be used to show the truth not to make a literary work aesthetic. Use of different emotions should be according to readers because if they can feel the same as the character of the literary work does than they can understand it better. Some author writes in order to sell and some to expose a truth to society but a true art is a perfect combination of both. True author is an author who knows how to keep a balance of truth and beauty in a work. By beauty I mean the artistic features of a novel. So not all arts bring us nearer to the truth as sometimes language and emotion comes as an obstacle between the truth and us.

Will Robots Change Our Lives in the Future free essay sample
Will robots change our lives in the future? Its a funny question to ask and it does not take a rocket scientist to understand that theyre changing our lives now in so many ways. They record our shows, cook our food, play our music, and even run our cars. We just dont see it because these robots dont have a face we can talk to or a butt we can kick. We are living in a technological era, when more and more high-tech gadgetry and automated appliances appear every day, when a lot of scientific enquiries are held. In fact we are only a consumer society that moves with the times. And advances made in robotââ¬â¢s field are just the job. Nowadays exist a lot of new kinds of robots and machines. And here are some of the newest. 1. Humanoid Ever-1 Android Ever-1 is a Korean android that is able to move its upper body, hold a conversation, and make facial expressions. This chatty-batty robot is a successful application of artificial intelligence that caused a stir within the community. 2. USC Robota Dolls The Robota Dolls from USC may look a littleâ⬠¦terrifying. But to the best of my knowledge Robota dolls have a significantly beneficial use: they help autistic children learn to react to facial expressions. They can also be used for a variety of other learning games and activities for handicapped children. The Robota Dolls stood the test of time and pulled off striking achievements. 3. T-Rot Robotic Bartender In 2005, visitors at the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) forum were greeted by a robotic bartender. The ââ¬Å"T-Rotâ⬠can recognize speech, fetch items itââ¬â¢s asked to get, and pick up delicate items thanks to its incredible synthetic skin. The skin can detect different pressures, just like human skin, and adjust its grip accordingly. This robot is earning its keep in hotels, restaurants and different companies. 4. Waseda University Flautist Robot Waseda University has been developing a flute-playing robot since 1990, but the most recent version, the Waseda Flutist 4, has taken the media by storm. The inventors got at it hammer and tongs and pushed the right buttons. This amazing mechanical man can play a perfect rendition of ââ¬Å"The Flight of the Bumblebeeâ⬠with mecha-lips and mecha-lungs. The robot curved its reputation thanks to this song. It is a new blood among the robots. 5. Rat Brain-Powered Robot This robot is an amazing discovery that runs on rat brain cells. The rats became inventorsââ¬â¢ guinea pigs. The cells are still alive and trained to perform the tasks of moving the robot around. The research centers are keeping their noses to the grindstone and are doing ground-breaking researches on eventually disrupting the memories of the brain cells to simulate Alzheimerââ¬â¢s or Parkinsonââ¬â¢s Disease. This will help researchers to study how the brain deals with such disruptions. But for a lot of people it is hard to bring home to themselves how they can treat so shabbily with rats. The consumer society we live in becomes more and more technological and people in it work by the sweat of theirs brow to do a lot of scientific projects and to make a change for the better. In the light of recent events we can see a lot of high-tech gadgetry that change and expand our life.

Sample APA Book Report Essay Format
Sample APA Book Report Essay FormatA sample APA book report essay format is the best form of evidence available for any prospective employer. Using the information in the sample report as part of your resume or cover letter is extremely important because it gives you a clear and concise way to explain your writing background. The format of a sample APA book report is rather simple and straightforward. It is an outline of the material you will be addressing and the formatting information you must include. You will need to create a table of contents plus page numbers for each chapter. In addition, the sample report should have a clear heading that does not interfere with the information presented within the chapter. There should also be a brief synopses statement at the top of the chapter that gives an overview of the title and the topic of the book. The chapter heading should be in the same specific paragraph style that you will use throughout the body of the book report. Additionally, i t is best to break the heading up into two paragraphs so that it has more of a professional look.In addition, you should place all references to sections within the paragraph and not within the body of the paragraph. If you use a double space in the body of the paragraph, then the references within the paragraph will overlap and this can distract from the report. If you place references within the paragraph it will provide readers with a clean break between each section. In the body of the report, you should have three sections. In the first section, you should list the title of the book, the author name, and the publisher. Each author should have his or her name, the name of the book, and a brief biography. In the second section, you should list the title of the book, the subtitle of the book, and the authors' names again in this order. The final section would contain the word 'EXCERPT' as well as the closing quotation marks. All the elements should be underlined in your sample repor t.Any other references in the book report that you feel necessary should be placed within the first paragraph of the introduction section and they should be in boldface letters. This will help the reader know what the reference is referring to without having to read the entire report.

7 Cases in Which the Name Is Not the Thing
7 Cases in Which the Name Is Not the Thing 7 Cases in Which the Name Is Not the Thing 7 Cases in Which the Name Is Not the Thing By Mark Nichol When referring to an entity anything from an object to an organization writers often confuse the name of the thing for the thing itself. Beware of the following types of composition confusion: 1. ââ¬Å"GRID, an acronym for Generating Renewable Ideas for Development, offers job training for low-income individuals.â⬠The acronym doesnââ¬â¢t offer job training; the organization does, so distinguish between the two, or simply parenthesize the full name by itself: ââ¬Å"GRID (Generating Renewable Ideas for Development) offers job training for low-income individuals.â⬠2. ââ¬Å"Being an ââ¬Å"environmentalistâ⬠conjures images of outdoor concerns like driving a hybrid vehicle, protecting areas of natural beauty, or keeping trash out of landfills.â⬠Being an environmentalist does no such thing; itââ¬â¢s the term itself that inspires the imagery, so make that distinction (and lose the annoying scare quotes): ââ¬Å"The term environmentalist conjures images of outdoor concerns like driving a hybrid vehicle, protecting areas of natural beauty, or keeping trash out of landfills. 3. ââ¬Å"With his talkie debut, as British secret agent Bulldog Drummond (1929), he became the first silent star to become even more popular in sound films than he had been during the silent era.â⬠The sentence refers to the film, not the title character. When discussing the actor, a reference to the character distinct from the title is called for: ââ¬Å"With his talkie debut, as the titular British secret agent in Bulldog Drummond (1929), he became the first silent star to become even more popular in sound films than he had been during the silent era.â⬠4. ââ¬Å"The pre-emptive offer- a common term in corporate transactions- is hardly new.â⬠The strategy is being equated with the term for it. However, the parenthetical should be worded to demonstrate the difference: ââ¬Å"The pre-emptive offer- thatââ¬â¢s a common term in corporate transactions- is hardly new.â⬠5. ââ¬Å"Give credit to The Grudge remake for inspiring a wave of American versions of Japanese horror films.â⬠Here, the definite article in the movie title is erroneously employed as an article in the framing sentence, but it cannot do double duty. Recast the sentence to include a separate definite article: ââ¬Å"Give credit to the remake of The Grudge for inspiring a wave of American versions of Japanese horror films.â⬠6. ââ¬Å"Mike is an Eagle Scout, a moniker he wears with pride and satisfaction.â⬠In the initial phrase, ââ¬Å"Eagle Scoutâ⬠is not a moniker; itââ¬â¢s a type of Boy Scout. The second phrase should be revised to focus on the latter at the expense of the former: ââ¬Å"Mike is an Eagle Scout, and he comports himself as one with pride and satisfaction.â⬠7. ââ¬Å"Users can choose from any Web site that offers RSS feeds, short for Really Simple Syndication.â⬠ââ¬Å"RSS feedsâ⬠is not an abbreviation; the three letters constitute one. Introduce semantic distance between the service and the initialism for it: ââ¬Å"Users can choose from any Web site that offers RSS feeds (RSS is short for Really Simple Syndication).â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day?
